To help HHKCS families gain a comprehensive understanding of HKU’s undergraduate admission policies and plan their academic pathways, HKU Admissions Officers Mr Edwin NG and Ms Katie Zhang visited HHKCS for the first time on 20th April. They delivered a JUPAS admission talk for G9-G11 students and parents.
The two officers explained HKU’s undergraduate application process, DSE admission standards and selection mechanisms, and also introduced the University’s summer programmes and talent development schemes to HHKCS families for the first time.
HKU Admission Policy and
Programme Highlights
Mr Edwin opened the talk with a systematic introduction to HKU’s admission policies and programme features.
A key highlight is HKU’s cross-faculty major/minor system. Students are no longer limited to a single discipline. Arts students can take Music or Translation as a minor, while Science students may also study Sociology. This flexible structure greatly expands students’ academic and career possibilities.
HKU also offers double degree programmes with top universities. New disciplines — aligned with industry trends. Graduates can join leading companies in Hong Kong and the Mainland, or pursue further studies at world-renowned universities.
HKU Programme Elective Requirements and Weighting Mechanism
Although most HKU programmes have no specific elective requirements, some—such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Quantitative Finance, Actuarial Science, and Applied AI—do. For example, Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science require M1 or M2.

College Development and New Programmes
HHKCS is located in the core area of Qianhai, closely connected with the HKU-Qianhai collaboration project. HKU has established multiple key initiatives in Qianhai, covering research translation, industry incubation, and talent development.
In 2026, HKU will launch three new faculties and 13 undergraduate programs across medicine, engineering, data science, and humanities. The i-school is a new faculty training future innovators through project-based learning. Graduates can pursue tech R&D or launch startups.
With the HKU-Qianhai project and our adjacent location, students can directly tap into Qianhai’s innovation ecosystem — where HKU ideas meet Qianhai execution.
HKU’s Selection Criteria
Mr Edwin emphasised on site: 100% of students admitted to HKU come from JUPAS Band A choices. This means students must put their desired HKU programme in their top three choices.
HKU values diversity, but successful applicants often share common traits: a love for learning, genuine commitment to their chosen subject, and the resilience to face challenges.
They want to see applicants actively exploring their discipline beyond the classroom — through community service, leadership roles, academic competitions, or research projects. Grades are the entry ticket, but what truly makes an applicant memorable are the experiences and qualities beyond grades.
