From “Visitor” to “Owner”: Putting Down Roots in Familiar Surroundings
Stepping into a new school means facing unfamiliar surroundings, a different learning pace, and new teachers — a lot for a six-year-old to handle.
At HHKCS, we start addressing this challenge from the very beginning of their journey in Kindergarten.
From Pre-K through to high school, our House activities — like the whole-school Long Ducker — along with events like the Winter Fair and festive performances, immerse our Lions in a warm, consistent community. They grow up here, known and celebrated, from the very beginning.
In the first term of K3, more targeted transition activities begin. Through ‘Lunch Buddy’, children eat with their Primary peers, gradually getting used to the dining hall and daily school life. They explore the Primary library and run freely on the Primary playground. For them, the Primary campus isn’t a strange new place — it’s a natural extension of their everyday surroundings.
When a child truly feels “this is my school,” they move up to Year 1 with less anxiety and more anticipation. That quiet confidence — rooted in belonging — is something no last-minute preparation can provide.

In a recent workshop for K3 families, our Primary English, Maths and Chinese teachers came to the Kindergarten to meet parents face to face.

●What can parents do now, in Kindergarten, to prepare their child for what’s ahead?

This kind of clarity and alignment can only come from being immersed in a single, coherent educational community from the very beginning.
From “Observer” to “Prepared”: A gentle transition through real experience.
On 12–13 March, our K3 children stepped into Primary classrooms for Transition Day. This wasn’t a quick tour — it was the natural next step after months of familiarisation with the campus and teachers.
● In Social Emotional Health, they learned how to navigate a new environment.
● In RWI, they built on the phonics foundations laid in Kindergarten, experiencing deeper learning.
● In Science, they carried forward their curiosity, now observing more systematically.
In just two days, our children moved from being Little Lions to becoming ‘almost-Primary’ students. This transition felt so natural because it didn’t happen in a vacuum — it unfolded in a familiar campus, with teachers they already knew. No strangeness, just gentle, steady growth.
